Hello and welcome to another Wisdom Wednesday, thank you for stopping in! This week we dive into one of the most misunderstood topics in youth and high school sports, development vs exposure. This is common in all sports today, but particularly common in sports such as baseball and softball. This blog is a brief overview of the topic, please check out the PowerPoint linked below for a full breakdown.
Let’s first start by defining what development vs exposure is.
Development is the pursuit of developing skillsets that will help you achieve success in your sport of choice. This can range from skill work (better swing or pitching mechanics), to gaining weight and strength in order to compete better amongst your peers. Development is subjective for everyone depending on their individual development curve.
Exposure is the pursuit of being seen OR the pursuit of finding better competition. This can range from signing up for college camps, showcases, or joining a competitive travel ball team.
So as an athlete, which one do you choose? This becomes confusing for parents, athletes, and coaches alike. I am here to help break down the topic based on my playing and coaching career.
The key factor in choosing to chase development vs. exposure is being honest with ourselves. Where are you in your playing career? How do you compare to your peers? Are there any low-hanging fruit that could make you a better competitor? These questions and many more will be presented and answered in the PowerPoint below!
Thank you for your time, check out the Power Point here for a full topic breakdown!
